01 · The challenge

A legacy .NET QMS too slow for fabrication teams

MRU's quality team relied on a legacy system built in .NET over more than two years. Despite that investment, it remained slow, and the delays held back everyday productivity for the people who depended on it most.

The system was also hard to use on mobile devices and tablets. That mattered because much of fabrication quality work does not happen at a desk. Inspectors and site teams work on the shop floor and at client locations, where they need to record results and check status on the spot. A desktop-first tool meant information was captured late, re-keyed later, or left in documents waiting to be filed.

Underneath the software problem sat a demanding process. Fabrication quality spans several inspection stages, multiple approvals and a large volume of documentation for every job. Each spool and joint has to be followed through welding, inspection and testing, and the evidence has to be assembled before the work can be handed over. MRU had no easy way to track spools and joints end to end, so status was hard to see and compiling the final documentation was slow and manual.

What MRU needed

A faster, more efficient and more scalable digital solution that could keep pace with project demands.

02 · The solution

A Mendix quality management system for fabrication

MXTechies migrated the QMS to Mendix, the low-code platform from Siemens, as a legacy modernisation project. Building on Mendix shortened development, improved performance and gave MRU a platform its teams can keep extending as projects change.

The application is delivered as a Progressive Web App (PWA) from a single codebase. The same QMS runs on desktops, tablets and mobile phones, so inspectors and quality teams can work wherever the job is: in the office, on the shop floor or at a client site.

Six modules, one quality lifecycle

The QMS brings the whole fabrication quality lifecycle into one connected application, organised into six modules:

  1. Store
  2. Welding
  3. Production
  4. QA/QCQuality assurance and quality control
  5. NDTNon-destructive testing
  6. Test Pack

Spool and joint traceability

In fabrication, a spool is a prefabricated assembly built in the shop, and each joint is a weld that must be recorded and inspected. Because every stage lives in the same application, MRU has complete traceability of every spool, joint and inspection stage.

What this means day to day

A quality engineer can see where any item stands, what has been inspected, what is waiting for approval and what has been recorded, without chasing documents across separate systems.

03 · Integrations

Azure AD, ERP/SFS, FCS and SSRS

The QMS connects to the systems MRU already runs through Mendix integrations, so it fits into the existing landscape instead of becoming another silo.

SystemRole in the QMS
Azure ADSecure single sign-on with users' existing work accounts
ERP / SFSData synchronisation, so records stay consistent across systems
FCSDocument management
SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services)Reporting
04 · Security and visibility

Security, audit logs and real-time visibility

  • Role-based access ensures each user sees and changes only what their role allows.
  • Audit logs record who did what and when, keeping quality data secure and accountable, in line with MXTechies' Mendix governance approach.
  • Interactive dashboards and automated reports give management real-time visibility of fabrication quality, replacing status-chasing with a live view.
05 · Test Pack reports

Automatic Test Pack reports

A Test Pack is the documentation package that typically brings together the drawings, weld records and inspection results needed before a fabricated system is tested and handed over. Compiling it by hand from separate records is slow work.

Step 1Inspection complete
Step 2Approval complete
AutomaticTest Pack report generated

In the new QMS, once inspection and approval are complete, the system generates a comprehensive Test Pack report automatically. That removes manual compilation effort and supports quality compliance, because the report is built directly from recorded, approved data.

  • End-to-end traceability of every spool, joint and inspection stage
  • No manual Test Pack compilation: reports generate automatically after approval
  • Secure and accountable access through Azure AD single sign-on, role-based access and audit logs
  • Real-time visibility for management through dashboards and automated reports
  • Faster change on the Mendix low-code platform as project needs evolve
07 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a quality management system for fabrication?

Software that tracks fabricated items through each quality stage, such as welding, inspection, non-destructive testing and final documentation, and records who approved what and when.

What is a Test Pack in fabrication?

A Test Pack is the documentation package that typically brings together drawings, weld records and inspection results before a fabricated system is tested and handed over. MRU's QMS generates it automatically once inspection and approval are complete.

Why migrate a legacy .NET QMS to Mendix?

MRU's legacy system was slow and hard to use on mobile devices. Moving to Mendix let MXTechies deliver faster, improve performance and ship one Progressive Web App for desktop, tablet and mobile.

Can the Mendix QMS be used on tablets at client sites?

Yes. It runs as a Progressive Web App from a single codebase, so inspectors and site teams use the same application on desktops, tablets and phones.

Which systems does the QMS integrate with?

Azure AD for single sign-on, ERP/SFS for data synchronisation, FCS for document management and SSRS for reporting.

How does the QMS trace spools and joints?

Every stage, from Store and Welding through NDT to Test Pack, runs in one application, so each spool, joint and inspection result is linked and visible end to end.
