A UAE bank can cut its AML alert backlog by letting AI do the gathering, not the deciding. AML alert triage automation pulls the customer, account and counterparty data behind each alert into one case file, drafts a summary for the investigator, and logs every step. The investigator still makes the call, the MLRO still dispositions, and suspicious transaction reports (STRs) are still filed by people through goAML. That keeps the human judgement and audit trail the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) expects, while removing the hours spent copying data between screens. It is AML compliance automation that speeds up people rather than replacing them.
—Key facts
- CBUAE's STR guidance: investigator recommendation and MLRO disposition within 20 calendar days of the alert
- STR filed with the UAE FIU through goAML within a further 15 days; urgent cases within 24 hours of disposition
- Tipping off a customer about an STR or investigation is prohibited
- CBUAE allows alert scoring and above- and below-the-line testing to cut false positives, but not suppression for higher-risk customers
- Transaction records must be kept for at least five years
- Federal Decree-Law No. 10 of 2025 replaced the 2018 AML law
Who this is for
This guide is for UAE banks and the people who own their alert queues: MLROs and deputy MLROs, heads of AML operations, financial crime compliance leads, and the technology teams that support them.
01Triage, investigation, disposition and filing: who does what
02Why the transaction monitoring alert backlog keeps growing
CBUAE's guidance on suspicious transaction reporting (section 4.1) expects the investigator's recommendation and the MLRO's decision within 20 days of the alert being generated, and the STR within 15 days of that decision (section 4.2). These are maximums; the guidance asks banks to report without delay. A backlog eats that window, and AML alert management breaks down for three reasons.
1. No context
The alert shows a transaction, not the network behind it. Investigators open core banking, KYC files, sanctions results and past cases one by one to see who the customer pays and who pays them.
2. Split processes
Monitoring raises the alert in one system, the investigation lives in spreadsheets and email, and the STR is typed into goAML by hand. Each handoff adds days.
3. No governance
When a team uses AI to clear false positives, nobody can show the regulator which step the model took, what it saw, and who approved the outcome.
03How Siemens Intelligence Center X supports AML investigation automation
Siemens describes Intelligence Center X (ICX) as one platform combining Mendix, Graph Studio and AI Studio, with an agentic enterprise pattern aimed at financial services that need full auditability. Those are the product. The AML triage app, its data model, the agent instructions and the connectors to your monitoring and core banking systems are what MXTechies designs and builds for each bank.
- Graph Studio holds the enterprise knowledge graph of customers, accounts and counterparties. This graph analytics for AML builds the case file as the alert fires.
- Workflow orchestration runs the AML case management workflow on Mendix workflow automation: AI for AML investigations drafts the summary, and the case moves to the investigator and MLRO with each decision recorded.
- Audit and governance layer logs every agent step and human decision for internal audit and the regulator. MXTechies configures this layer as part of the build.
04What it looks like in practice
A cash-deposit alert fires on a trading company's account. Before an investigator opens it, the graph has linked the company to its directors, two related accounts and a counterparty flagged in an earlier case. The agent drafts a summary of the activity, the links it found and the typology it resembles, with each fact traced to its source. The investigator reads it, adds judgement, and recommends. The MLRO dispositions inside the 20-day window, and if an STR is needed, compliance staff file it in goAML.
The time saved comes from the gathering, not the judgement: investigators stop opening five systems per alert and start from a sourced draft. MXTechies will publish measured results once a bank pilot has verified them.
05Security, access and data governance
AML data is among the most sensitive a bank holds, so the design starts there:
- Hosting: the platform runs on-premises, in a private cloud or in an approved cloud region, as the bank's policy requires.
- Access: role-based access limits each user to the cases and fields their role needs; agents run with the same restrictions.
- Traceability: every fact in a draft links to its source record, and every agent action is logged.
- Tipping-off controls: case data stays inside the compliance workflow. Under Article 25 of the AML-CFT Law, alerting a customer to an STR or investigation is a federal crime.
- Retention: records are kept for at least five years, in line with CBUAE transaction monitoring guidance.
06Which deployment pattern fits: Agentic enterprise
Banks have no Siemens shop-floor systems to layer on, and the value lies in auditability, not industrial ontologies. That makes AML triage an agentic enterprise use case: agents gather and draft, people decide, and the audit and governance layer records both. Your monitoring system, core banking and case tools stay in place; ICX works across them. See how Intelligence Center X works.
07Your first 90 days
Days 1–15: readiness and use case
Measure your backlog and median days from alert to disposition. Pick one alert type with high volume and a high false-positive share.
Days 16–45: graph-grounded proof of concept on your data
Load past alerts and their outcomes into Graph Studio. Compare the drafted case files with what your investigators actually concluded.
Days 46–90: governed pilot
Run live alerts of that type through the workflow with investigators deciding and every step logged. Track hours per alert, days to disposition and backlog size against your baseline.
